Enforcement standard — ship the fix in 72 hours
You ship creative across 5+ surfaces with 3 teams and it keeps drifting — we install enforcement so it can't.
You're selling a smell with a picture and every visual law has to compensate for the one sensory element you can't show. If your fragrance PDP isn't passing all 13, your buyer is leaving for the brand that figured out how to communicate scent visually. 72 hours fix.
You already know this is a problem. The standard says: name the violation, assign the fix, and ship it before the next review exposes it at a cost you can't bill back.
The circled violation on the left is the failing state most brands ship. The frame on the right is what passes the Binary Gate.

Law 1
Hero image shows transformation, not product
Does your hero image show an outcome or result — not just the product itself?
Law 2
Skin-tone / demographic diversity in first viewport
Does your hero imagery include diverse representation in the first visible section?
Law 3
Every claim has visual proof adjacent
For every claim ('clinically tested,' 'reduces frizz 80%'), is there adjacent proof — image, badge, or citation?
Law 4
Max 2 typefaces across all assets
Count the typefaces visible on your PDP. Brand name, body, CTA — if more than 2, you fail.
Law 5
CTA button contrast ≥ 4.5:1
Test your add-to-cart button color against its background at contrast-ratio.com. Must be 4.5:1 or higher.
Law 6
Price visible above fold on mobile
Open your PDP on an iPhone. Can you see the price without scrolling?
Law 7
Product images have ≥ 12px white space margin
Do your product images have breathing room, or are they touching edges?
Law 8
Review count visible within 2 scrolls
Can a buyer see your review count and star rating without scrolling more than twice on mobile?
Law 9
Ingredient callouts use clinical language standard
Are ingredient names in clinical/INCI format with percentages where applicable?
Law 10
No lifestyle copy without a conversion anchor adjacent
After every editorial or lifestyle section, is there an add-to-cart or CTA button nearby?
Law 11
Ad creative matches lander visual within 80%
If your ad shows a lifestyle scene, does your PDP open to the same visual world?
Law 12
No discount signals on full-price pages
Is there any sale badge, 'we made too much,' or discount signal visible on a full-price PDP?
Law 13
Font hierarchy consistent: no decorative fonts
Is every typeface used for a clear purpose? No decorative or display fonts in body text.

The Forensic Standard
Fragrance brands face the hardest visual governance challenge: selling the invisible. The 13 Visual Laws audit builds the proxy system that converts.
Fragrance is the hardest visual governance challenge in beauty. You're selling the invisible — you cannot show the product working. Every visual has to carry the weight of the scent experience. Most fragrance PDPs default to bottle photography and lifestyle shots that communicate nothing. The brands that win build a complete proxy system: color, texture, occasion, emotion, status — all visible before the buyer ever opens the box.
The same framework used in Shopify PDP audit checklist applies here — same laws, calibrated to this sub-niche and cluster.
Each card maps a law to its failing state (what most brands ship) and the governed benchmark (what passes the gate).
LAW 1Emotional proxy imagery in hero (Law 1)
✗ Failing State
Bottle-only hero with no occasion, texture, or emotion signal
Category median: 22%
✓ Governed Benchmark
Best-in-class brands enforce this law at the Binary Gate — no exceptions for hero assets.
Top 10%: 86%
LAW 2Occasion context visible in first viewport
✗ Failing State
No occasion cue — buyer can't place where/when to wear it
Category median: 19%
✓ Governed Benchmark
Best-in-class brands enforce this law at the Binary Gate — no exceptions for hero assets.
Top 10%: 84%
LAW 3CTA contrast passing 4.5:1 (Law 5)
✗ Failing State
On-brand gold CTA on cream background fails contrast test
Category median: 58%
✓ Governed Benchmark
Best-in-class brands enforce this law at the Binary Gate — no exceptions for hero assets.
Top 10%: 97%
Ship Today — No Designer Required
Two fixes you can implement in the next two hours with existing assets.
These aren't theoretical. They're the two highest-frequency failures in the category, fixable without a creative brief or a shoot.
1
Emotional proxy imagery in hero (Law 1)
Most brands ship: Bottle-only hero with no occasion, texture, or emotion signal. Governed standard: 86% of top brands pass this gate.
Action: Open your hero asset. If it matches the failing state, it doesn't pass the Binary Gate. Crop or swap — no new photography required for this fix.
2
Occasion context visible in first viewport
Most brands ship: No occasion cue — buyer can't place where/when to wear it. Governed standard: 84% of top brands pass this gate.
Action: Edit the copy directly in your CMS or ad platform — add the adjacent proof element or rephrase the claim to meet the gate. No design file required.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you govern a product you can't show working?+
You build a visual proxy system. Color temperature communicates warmth vs. cool. Texture references the scent profile. Occasion imagery tells the buyer when and where. Status signals tell her who wears it. The 13 Visual Laws test whether your proxy system passes the binary gate.
Is visual governance more important for fragrance than other beauty categories?+
Yes. Because you can't demonstrate the product, every visual has to do more work. The governance stakes are higher — a failed hero image in skincare costs you conversion; in fragrance, it costs you the entire purchase decision.
What's the most common fragrance governance failure?+
Law 1: the hero doesn't communicate transformation. A bottle on a marble surface communicates nothing about the experience of wearing it. The top 10% of fragrance brands lead with occasion, emotion, and identity — not the object.
Fragrance governance can't be improvised. Every element that can't communicate the scent is wasted real estate that should be communicating desire, identity, and proof. Boy Smells built $30M on governance. Your brand has the scent. The audit gives you the visual system to sell it. Wait another launch cycle and you're still improvising.
